I used to dread Sundays.
Since I was a little girl, I disliked Sundays. They were just heavy days with a pit in my stomach as a kid. It meant the next day was school. They weren’t happy days. No matter what we did on Sundays or how much fun everyone else seemed to be having, I always had this nagging feeling.
Later as an adult I no longer had the dreaded back-to-school day, but I still didn’t like that the weekend was over. I couldn’t relax and felt like I should be “productive.” It wasn’t enjoyable at all. It was this long, anxious countdown to Monday. For some reason, I had it in my head you were supposed to clean Sundays, which was what I focused on (and failed at miserably).
So, I stopped. Now, my weekends are completely different. I make Saturday mornings my major cleaning day. It works as my weekly home cleaning schedule to “reset” my home and give myself permission to breathe and enjoy rest of the weekend. That small shift changed everything, and it’s one of the best changes I’ve made in my cleaning routines.
Why I Do My Cleaning on Saturday (Not Sunday)
I would try to do all the cleaning, plan meals, make grocery lists, do laundry and prepare for the week on Sunday. I’d be so burnt out by the end of the evening and never even got a chance to have “me” time, or if I did, I’d feel guilty for not cleaning.
With this cleaning routine, I feel like I earn my naps (because I love my naps) and free time to do something fun. I actually enjoy my Sundays now because I’m not buried in backlogged chores. I have more time for self-care on Sundays, or whatever I want to do.
My Actual Weekly Home Cleaning Schedule
First, I will tell you what it isn’t. It’s not a deep clean. It’s not about being perfect. It’s a weekly cleaning routine that refreshes the main areas. You will feel and notice the difference, but you won’t spend your whole Saturday scrubbing baseboards. If you’re using my 10-minute cleaning routine and other tools that help keep you afloat during the week, you can get the weekly cleaning done pretty quickly.
It is a realistic way to commit to a weekly cleaning routine. It’s flexible like all of my routines, which aren’t rigid but offer structure. It’s a mental shift that says, “You’ve done enough; now go enjoy your weekend.” It’s a tool to help you feel calmer and more grounded going into the new week.
I break it down to my main areas that need to be done weekly because they’re used regularly. For me, that’s my kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom and entryway.
1. Quick Clean Your Main Areas
These are the places you move through daily.
- Declutter countertops in the kitchen and bathroom
- Run the dishwasher or wash dishes and clean the kitchen sink
- Wipe the kitchen counters, dining table, coffee bar area, fronts of appliances, and wipe inside the microwave (this is a quick wipe that makes a visible difference, not a deep clean)
- Wipe bathroom sink, mirror, toilet and brush the toilet bowl
- Do a quick tidy in the living room: pillows, blankets, random clutter
- I do a quick dust where needed
- Take out all the trash (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom)
- Sweep and mop
- Tidy the bedroom, change sheets, clear surfaces, quick dust
- Grab a basket (or empty Amazon box) and do a fast sweep through the house picking up items that don’t belong
Tip: Use a timer and break up your tasks into time blocks of 10, 20 or 30 minutes. You’d be surprised how much you can get done in 20 minutes when you’re cleaning with a timer. It will also help build momentum when you see results.
2. Reset the Laundry Situation
If you’re like me, laundry is the background music of life.
- Toss in one load (or fold one)
- Put away any clean clothes
- Gather towels that need to be washed, and set out clean towels
I don’t try to finish all the laundry (in fact, I don’t think it’s ever finished); just enough to feel in control again.
3. Do Something for You
Now you get to stop. You’ve earned it. Make a coffee and sit down with it. Read a book, work on a hobby, water your plants, or go out guilt-free,
What I love most about doing my weekly cleaning routine is there is still time to do some of it the next day if something comes up, without spending the entire weekend or an entire day cleaning.
